About the Asian Academic Libraries Online Statistics: Pilot Project

This website was developed for a pilot project which enabled the development, setup and maintenance of an online website for the collection, presentation and benchmarking of library statistics for Asian Academic libraries. Twenty-two libraries from 4 countries in the region participated in the pilot project. Data for 2005, 2006 and 2007 was collected, loaded and made available for benchmarking. Sponsorship was generously provided by the iGroup (Asia). The final phase of the project was an evaluation of the online website and the data collection process. The results of this evaluation were presented by Cathie Jilovsky at the “Academic Librarian 2: Singing in the Rain” Conference held in Hong Kong on 11-12 March 2010. The paper and presentation are available from the Conference website http://www.lib.polyu.edu.hk/ALSR2010/Programme.html.

CAVAL will maintain the Asian Online Statistics website into the future. Some of the participating libraries are keen to continue to contribute data and to grow the database, however for this to happen further funding will be required. Discussions are ongoing as to how this can be achieved.

Objectives of the Pilot Project

• development and provision of an online statistical website for Asian academic libraries
• implementation of sophisticated functionality for online benchmarking
• improvements to the collection processes for the individual libraries
• provision of a sustainable online statistical service for Asian academic libraries
